 Barotrauma Introduction:

Barotrauma is an underwater survival-horror role-playing game set in a futuristic world where players control a submarine exploring the unforgiving depths of Europa, one of Jupiter's moons. Developed by Undertow Games and published by Daedalic Entertainment, the game transitioned from an early access beta phase in 2019 to its official release on Windows, macOS, and Linux in March 2023.


In Barotrauma, players assume various roles within the submarine's crew, facing the challenges of coexisting with fellow crew members. Some game modes introduce the element of treachery, adding an extra layer of tension to the gameplay.

Gameplay:


The majority of the action unfolds inside the submerged submarines navigating Europa's ocean. At the start of each session, players are assigned specific roles that grant them access to unique abilities and equipment. The crew is given missions, ranging from transporting cargo between outposts to battling hostile underwater creatures or recovering alien relics. During the rounds, players have the freedom to make decisions without strict game-imposed objectives.

The game employs a top-down 2D perspective and intricately simulates multiple submarine systems, including oxygen levels, power, weaponry, and crew health. The voyage is constantly endangered by various hazards, such as aggressive marine life, parasite outbreaks, and the potential betrayal of crew members. Incompetence in maintaining ship equipment, like nuclear reactors or oxygen generators, can lead to disaster, emphasizing the importance of crisis management throughout gameplay.

Damage to the submarine's hull can trigger flooding, impacting the vessel's structures and restricting player movement. Without proper equipment, players trapped in flooded areas risk suffocation or even being crushed due to barotrauma. As the submarine is the crew's lifeline, an irreparably damaged vessel often signifies the end of a round.

Barotrauma offers both single-player and multiplayer modes, allowing players to explore the vast, uncharted ocean depths, tackle various tasks, and confront environmental dangers and hostile creatures. The game's core gameplay revolves around cooperation among players to maintain life support, repair the submarine, and fend off enemy threats. Players can enhance their survival chances by crafting equipment and customizing submarines using a sophisticated crafting system.

Joonas Rikkonen, the lead developer, drew inspiration from the online role-playing game Space Station 13, appreciating its emergent gameplay and focus on human interaction. However, he also noted Space Station 13's unintuitive user interface and technical issues. With Barotrauma, Rikkonen aimed to build upon the strengths of Space Station 13 while addressing some of its shortcomings. He also took inspiration from "Pressure," a game concept posted anonymously on 4chan's video games board.

Development of Barotrauma commenced in 2014 under the working title "Subsurface." From 2015 to 2018, pre-alpha builds were released to the public for testing and feedback. Following the game's commercial release in 2019, subsequent versions became exclusive to Steam, while the unsupported free version was renamed "Barotrauma Legacy."
